First-Time Storage Users: Everything You Need to Know Before Renting a Unit

Are you a first-time storage user? If so, you’ve come to the right place! At Handy Lock Self Storage, we’re here to make your first storage experience simple and stress-free. Below, we’re breaking down everything you need to know before renting a unit.

Choosing the Right Unit Size
The first step is selecting a unit size that fits your needs. At Handy Lock, we offer a variety of sizes, including 5×5, 5×10, 10×10, 10×15, 10×20, 10×25, and 10×30. Smaller units are perfect for items like boxes, seasonal décor, or a mattress, while larger units are ideal for storing furniture, appliances, or the contents of an entire home. The more items you have—and the larger they are—the bigger the unit you’ll want to consider.

Climate-Controlled vs. Non-Climate-Controlled Units
Next, decide whether you need a climate-controlled or non-climate-controlled unit. Climate-controlled units are best for items sensitive to extreme temperatures, such as furniture, bedding, rugs, clothing, electronics, and items made of wood, plastic, or wax.
Non-climate-controlled units are great for durable items that can handle temperature changes, especially things typically stored outdoors—like gardening tools, lawn equipment, or patio furniture. These units also offer the convenience of easy drive-up access for quick loading and unloading.
